Different types of cannabis seeds – Feminized, regular and autoflowering

Cannabis seeds

In this article we will be explaining the differences between feminized, auto flowering and regular cannabis seeds. However, before that we shall explain about the characteristics of the cannabis plant also known as marijuana or cannabis sativa.

The cannabis sativa, marihuana or marijuana it is an annual plant, which means: it germinates, grows, flowers and dies out within a year (except in auto flowering cannabis plants). It is also a dioecious species, that is, there are male and female plants and new samples arise with the cross of both genders. It is very important to take in account that we will get buds with psychoactive effects only from female plants. The male plants are only used to cross with female plants through pollination.

There are three types of cannabis strains: cannabis indica, cannabis sativa and cannabis rudelaris; and also three types of cannabis seeds: regular seeds, feminized seeds and auto flowering seeds.

Existen tres variedades de cannabis, el cannabis indica, cannabis sativa y cannabis rudelaris.

Regular Seeds

These types of seeds give both male and female plants; therefore the grower doesn’t have any control over the sex of the plants. This could mean that when you start differentiating the growing plants you may have to cut the male plants so that they don’t affect the production of the female plants. If these types of seeds are grown outdoors you will get annual plants as a result.

Outdoor growing:

This type of growing gives annual plants; they are usually planted between March and June (for the Northern Hemisphere) or September and December (for the Southern Hemisphere). Furthermore, they are harvested between September and November (for the Northern Hemisphere) or March and May (for the Southern Hemisphere).

Indoor growing:

With this type of growing we can plant the seeds anytime of the year, as we will be the ones controlling the climate parameters (light, air, water…). For the growing period we need a cycle of 18 hours of bright light and 6 hours of darkness whereas for the flowering period we need a cycle of 12 hours of bright light and 12 hours of darkness. As for other parameters such as the humidity, flowering period, etc. will depend on the strain of the grown seeds.

The flowering period of the female plants until the harvest is usually less in the indica plants (from 45 to 70 days) than in the sativa ones (from 60 to 90 days), as the buds of the sativa plants take longer to mature. On the other hand when growing male plants they usually have a lesser flowering period than the female plants.

Feminized Seeds

The feminized cannabis seeds always give us female plants avoiding the growth of male plants in the crop. The female plants produce resinous buds with different flavours and effects, depending if the grown strains are cannabis indica, cannabis sativa, a hybrid of indica-sativa or cannabis rudelaris. If these types of cannabis seeds are grown outdoors you will get annual plants as a result. Their outdoor and indoor growing characteristics are the same as the ones of the regular seeds.

Auto Flowering Seeds

This type of seeds can be regular or feminized, but in the market most of them are nearly always feminized. The auto flowering cannabis seeds produce plants which have a cycle of life between 2 to 3 months, i.e. the plant germinates, grows and flowers in this period of time. This is due to the fact that these types of seeds are a cross between cannabis indica or cannabis sativa with cannabis rudelaris.

Outdoor growing:

Because of its special feature (auto flowering), this type of seeds can be grown from March to October (for the Northern Hemisphere) or from September to April (for the Southern Hemisphere). Taking in account that these strains have a life cycle of between 2-3 months, the grower can plan his crops and keep his harvests throughout the whole year.

Indoor growing:

During their life cycles (2-3 months) they need between 18-20 hours of bright light and between 4-6 hours of darkness, depending on the different strains grown.
